For Immediate Release, 11 June 2025
Johannesburg
The OR Tambo School of Leadership is pleased to announce the appointment of Comrade David Makhura as the new Principal of the School, effective 2 June 2025.
Cde Makhura brings with him a wealth of experience in political leadership, public policy, and governance, underpinned by a deep and lifelong commitment to the liberation movement, organisational renewal, and cadre development. As a seasoned public servant and dedicated activist, he is widely respected for his visionary and ethical leadership, as well as his ability to drive transformation.
Currently serving as the Chairperson of the Governing Board of the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Leadership School in Tanzania and as the Head of the ANC’s Political Education and Training Department, Cde Makhura has long been at the forefront of advancing political education in the ANC and its Alliance partners. He has played a central role in shaping the political education ecosystem of the broader Mass Democratic Movement, building networks with regional and global institutions.
Cde Makhura’s tenure as Premier of Gauteng (2014–2022) was marked by integrity and innovation. Under his leadership, the province achieved a record number of clean audits, introduced transparency-enhancing measures such as the Open Tender Process, and implemented lifestyle audits for public office bearers. His commitment to ethical governance and accountability set a high standard in public administration.
A former Provincial Secretary and Chairperson of the ANC in Gauteng, Cde Makhura holds a Master of Science degree in Public Policy and Management. He has consistently championed the importance of education, both political and academic, and was instrumental in the establishment of impactful training initiatives such as the Walter Sisulu Leadership Academy and the NEHAWU National Political School. He has also supported academic development for public representatives and union leaders across the movement.
His appointment as Principal comes at a time when the OR Tambo School of Leadership seeks to deepen its impact, renew its methods, and sharpen its focus on political training, organisational capacity building, and ethical leadership.
We are confident that Cde David Makhura’s vast expertise, unwavering dedication to the movement, and proven leadership will significantly strengthen the School’s mission of developing capable and ethical cadres for progressive social change.
